“Quietway 22” is a 6.5km route connecting Stratford High Street to Cycle Superhighway 3 at Newham Way via West Ham and Plaistow Park. It is mostly constructed on the embankment containing the Northern Outfall Sewer. It’s accessible to both cyclists and pedestrians and is open 24-hours-a-day. It is known locally as “The Greenway”.
On 11th October 2018 the Greater London Authority officially launched “Quietway 22” and released a press statement lauding the route. The statement mentions safety on several occasions:
…Q22 … enables cyclists to travel through safer, less busy streets…
…Being able to ride safely through London’s backstreets away from busy main roads is one of the ways of enabling more people of different ages and backgrounds to cycle more often…
Further Mayor Sadiq Khan added:
It is great to see that Londoners of all ages and abilities are embracing the opportunity to ride safely…
Further Cllr Rachel Tripp, Newham Council’s Cabinet Member for Environment and Highways
… we need to provide safe and attractive places where people want to walk and cycle, and Quietway 22 is a vital part of that…
…Quietway 22 delivers a safe, family-friendly and traffic-free connection…
The Mayor made crime mapping a key manifesto commitment and it is an integral part of our strategy to make London safer … It is a proven technique for increasing public safety and putting extra resources into crime hotspots where they are most needed.
Much to the disappointment of users of the Greenway crime on the Greenway is not recorded as occurring .....
